About the Exhibition: RealUnreal challenges traditional notions of representation through the work of four artists who make the intangible aspects of time, memory, imagination and scientific theory tangible in their representations of the natural world. Through the imagined atmospheres Hilary Brace creates; to the manifestation of the underlying clock work of mother nature in Linda Darlings work; to the notions of memory and time infused in the work of Thom Sawyer, and Dennis Pinette; these artists bend our pliable notions of place, by making the real unreal, and the unreal real.

UNTITLED: ABSTRACT EXHIBITIONJuly 10-26

"The Bada Bing" by Patricia Rosoff

Simsbury abstract artist Joe Nicorici wanted to curate an abstract exhibit, and in February, he signed up his first artist: Patricia Rosoff, his art teacher and mentor at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, where he was in the class of 1999.

Rosoff did not live to see the exhibit. She was killed in late March in an auto accident in West Hartford.

UNTITLED: ABSTRACT EXHIBITION is at Hartford ArtSpace, 555 Asylum Ave., from July 10, when it opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. (suggested donation $5), until July 26. Gallery hours are Friday to Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Half of the artists' entry fees, and a percentage of donations from the reception, will benefit the Greater Hartford Arts Council. RIVER/SEA

Solo Exhibition on the theme of Water by Connecticut Artist Barbara Hocker will be at The Vernon Community Arts Center  from June 22, 2014 through September 27, 2014.

Vernon, Connecticut – River/Sea is an exhibition of works on/of paper that explore the artist’s thoughts on water as both subject matter and metaphor. Traces of a flood, memories of a childhood by the sea, and the trauma of oil spills are the artist’s inspiration for a series of handmade books, two room-sized installations, and other works on/of paper. Hocker begins with digital images of water from Connecticut waterways and combines them with various other waterbased media, encaustic, and video to produce ethereal yet intimate works of art. Through the Static and Distance is a room-sized installation of hanging rice paper panels printed with digital photos and infused with encaustic. Video projections provide the lighting. Viewers can travel into the center of the sculpture and back out again. The artist will be in residence June 16 to June 20 creating another on-site paper/fabric waterfall installation. The public is invited to visit from 1pm to 5pm each day to watch the installation take shape.

There will be an opening reception for the artist on Sunday June 22, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm. The public is welcome. Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday 1pm to 5pm

Richard Harden through May 4 at the Clare Gallery

The Clare Gallery is pleased to present Metanoia, a dramatic series of paintings by artist Richard Harden. The series consists of more than fifteen paintings that question the human condition through metaphorical associations. This exhibition is free and open to the public and extends from March 20–May 4, 2014.

A reception will be held on Thursday, April 24th, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. At the reception, Harden will discuss his undying search for universal meaning and imagery in the struggles and resurrection of the human condition.

The Clare Gallery’s hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Gallery and all related events are open to the public. For two years, from 1995 to 1997, painter Norman Sunshine focused his energies on the production of a series of group portraits. These large scale paintings took as their subjects Sunshine’s friends and neighbors in Litchfield County, Connecticut, where some of New York City’s luminaries keep country homes. As a social diary, these paintings document the lifestyles and relationships of the social elite including well-known figures in the literary, art and music worlds such as Paige Rense Noland, Peter Duchin and Brooke Haywood.With these candid tableaux, Sunshine provides an intimate look at a privileged class and chronicles the complexity of interpersonal relationships.

NBMAA Given 165 Coastal Paintings And $1 Million

The New Britain Museum of American Art announced this week the gift of 165 paintings, all of them of coastal images, as well as a $1 million donation to the museum's capital campaign.

CARDBOARD SCULPTOR HENRY KLIMOWICZ WILL BE ‘TAKING OVER’ THE MORRISON GALLERY IN KENT STARTING JULY 20TH

Henry Klimowicz, a sculptor/installation artist who works in cardboard, launches a show called ‘Taking Over’ at The Morrison Gallery, starting Saturday, July 20th. The exhibit will feature many recent large scale works arrayed throughout the 7,000 square foot gallery located in the Old Barn section of town near the corner of Routes 7 and 341.

Klimowicz’s inventiveness combined with the adaptable nature of his work creates a sculpture exhibition unprecedented at the gallery. Included are several large pieces that climb 17 feet high, accentuating the vaulted ceiling of the gallery. And, in a small room Klimowicz has created an extension of his studio, adapting larger pieces to a small space and covering the walls and ceilings with his organic and abstract forms.

Squeeze Play is the upcoming exhibition at Five Points Gallery of artist John Willis’s recent drawings, prints and paintings. Inspired by architectural structures such as bridges, tobacco barns, fences, and shipping crates, Willis explores the inevitable defects and deterioration of these constructions to comment on the precariousness and fragility of contemporary life.

Käthe Kollwitz prints at U. of St. Joseph

An exhibit of etchings, lithographs and woodcuts by the legendary Käthe Kollwitz, who chronicled the lives of the working classes in Germany in the early 20th century, will be on exhibit until Sunday, March 17, at the Art Gallery at University of St. Joseph.

A gallery talk and reception will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m.

The gallery is in The Bruyette Athenaeum on USJ’s West Hartford campus at 1678 Asylum Ave.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday: 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

Calafiore - Looking Through a Glass Darkly

"Looking Through a Glass, Darkly" the work of Robert Calafiore

These one-of-a-kind photographs are made using a pinhole camera on traditional light sensitive color paper. They are exposed for 30 minutes to 30,000 watts of light and then processed in a darkroom with chemistry. There are no film negatives and there is no digital technology. The color is achieved through lighting and he objects themselves.
