Jane Peterson: At Home & Abroad
thru Jan. 28

Jane Peterson
At Home and Abroad
Runs through January 28, 2018
Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury CT.

This retrospective of modernist painter Jane Peterson (1876-1965) reflects the lifelong creative output of an artist who started her career as an American Impressionist before World War I and who evolved to become an Expressionist in the latter part of her life. Subjects include her impressionist paintings of France, Venice and the gardens at the estate of her friend Louis Comfort Tiffany; her loosely brushed, softly colored scenes of Turkey and Egypt; and her bold, bright modernist interpretations of her home cities of New York, Gloucester and Palm Beach. Peterson’s colorful and festive subjects are expressive reflections of her zest for life and prodigious energy. Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad unites her work in one location for the first time in over 40 years, showing the breadth of both her skill and subjects.

Pablo Delano, a painter-turned-photographer, documents the city of Hartford in flux. His exhibition Hartford Views consists of large format photographs that focus on the built environment of this small metropolis. The photographs, spanning eight years, highlight the nuances and contradictions inherent in a city with a layered history, and record what has been lost over time. They are not sociological statements, despite their subject matter; Delano’s love of visual form, design, composition, and color elevate the images to works of art.

Woodcut Memory Game
Bryan Nash Gill

If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, artist Bryan Nash Gill reminds us why. This fun memory game based on his best-selling book, Woodcut, offers twenty-six distinctive woodcut prints (fifty-two pairs) nested in a handsome keepsake box. The arboreal rings come to life in exquisite detail to challenge your mind and beautify your table.

Brick Walk Fine Art is pleased to announce our next exhibition featuring selected paintings by noted area artist, Howard Rackliffe. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with a major exhibition of Rackliffe's work at the New Britain Museum of American Art, presented on the centenary of his birth in New Britain. The exhibition will be comprised of pieces from a number of fine private collections. A self taught artist, Rackliffe was particularly inspired by the rugged and elemental landscapes in Maine but he also painted numerous self-portraits and still lifes with the same rigor and power.

Rackliffe’s paintings have been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Todd Gallery, NY; the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; and the Caldbeck Gallery, ME., and in group exhibitions at the Virginia Museum, Richmond, VA; Jacques Seligmann Gallery, NY; and the Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL. He was one of eight artists featured in the 8 From Connecticut exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1960, that also included Cleve Gray and Bernard Chaet. His work was the focus of a retrospective exhibition in 1990 at the New Britain Museum of American Art, CT. that traveled to the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, ME. Rackliffe’s works are also represented in the collections of the Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA; Columbia University, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Portland Museum of Art, ME; and the Farnsworth Museum, ME.
