EMERGING ARTIST EXPLORES GLOBALIZATION THROUGH SATELLITE ART IN HOPES OF ENGAGING OTHER YOUNG ARTISTS

Jeremy J. Starn showcases his new series of satellite images, titled “Mirrors In The Sky”, which aims to engage and empower young artists in northwest Connecticut. From oil fields in Saudi Arabia to deforestation in Brazil, his work explores the most visible impacts of globalization and development. Using uniquely crafted satellite images he investigates the marks of human activity on the planet, with a focus on natural resource management, industrial agriculture and climate change.

“Mirrors In The Sky” opening reception is Friday, November 27th 2015, from 5–8pm at the Noelke Gallery in Torrington Connecticut. The show runs until January 21st, 2016.

The painterly, and sometimes abstract, satellite images of human activity are both astonishing and thought-provoking. The artist remarks, “I hope that when people see my work they step back and reflect on the unprecedented global development that humans have achieved.” Through this global perspective, Jeremy J. Starn hopes to bring inspiration and empowerment to the young artist community in northwest Connecticut.

Jeremy J. Starn earned a BFA in Photography from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge MA in 2014. After graduating he worked for one year in northeast Thailand with a community rights organization. This experience gave him a new outlook on how strong communities can support the health of individuals and their environments. He currently resides in his hometown, Barkhamsted Connecticut.

The Noelke Gallery, located at 15 Water Street in downtown Torrington, is a conceptual art project owned and managed by renowned sculptor and painter John H. Noelke. The Noelke Gallery is an attempt to remove the elitist discernment of contemporary art and hopes to curate an approachable gallery that encourages conversation, sparks imagination, and serves as a haven for anyone interested.

Patricia Rosoff was a member of the Board of Directors of Artists in Real Time, Inc. This award has been created in remembrance of her dedication to this organization and hundreds of local artists. Pat, who we lost on March 25, 2014, was a beloved teacher, art critic, author and artist who described her work as “free-wheeling color abstraction”. She was an important part of Open Studio Hartford for the past 20 years starting back in the 1990s when she boarded the shuttle bus as a most entertaining tour guide. Throughout the years, she was a driving force and brought insight, artistry and credibility to A.R.T. We hope in a small way this keeps her memory alive.

ELIGIBLITY: This competition is open to all abstract visual artists (excluding video) who reside in Connecticut. All pieces of abstract art must be original and personally executed.

PRIZES: First Prize $1,000. Second Prize $500. Each winner will receive $250 in Jerry’s Artarama merchandise and the opportunity to have an exhibit at the Aetna Gallery, at its Hartford headquarters.

Florin Firimita at UConn Torrington, Feb. 9 - April 10

The UConn Torrington campus ARTS PROJECT will feature the work of Romanian –born artist Florin Firimita at the campus’ Brick Wall Exhibition Space and the Whitson Gallery from February 9 – April 10, 2015. The exhibit, Reliquaries includes mixed media paintings, notebooks and resource materials from the artist’s studio. The documentary film, The Art of Leaving: A Portrait of Florin Ion Firimita will be shown on Thursday, February 26th, at 6:30 PM, followed by a conversation with the artist. The Art of Leaving depicts the journey of self-discovery for this Romanian immigrant trying to regain the past through painting, ultimately exploring his internal and external journeys and how they influenced the process and meaning of his art. Sponsored by the ARTS Project, the screening of the film and conversation will be held in the Whitson Gallery, followed by a reception for the artist.

Artist's Statement - Anita Balkun
I am a collector of the commonplace. My work reuses stuff headed for the recycle bin or trash and transforms it into unexpected forms. The straightforward integrity of the materials allows the sculptural and sometimes interactive aspect of the artwork to highlight extraordinary qualities of the objects. I search for content within the history of the object - its use or its journey - and use that information as a springboard to the form. Abundance, multiples, texture and generosity also have their place in the artworks.

While the "stuff" is familiar, its juxtaposition to a particular space or daily activity adds potency and intention to its artistic transformation. This sampling of artwork demonstrates the ability of throwaway materials to transform the spaces they occupy, availing you to see them in a new context and in large-scale formats. They fuse recognizable materials to the tempo of life, and often originate through situations of personal serendipity.

About the Exhibition: RealUnreal challenges traditional notions of representation through the work of four artists who make the intangible aspects of time, memory, imagination and scientific theory tangible in their representations of the natural world. Through the imagined atmospheres Hilary Brace creates; to the manifestation of the underlying clock work of mother nature in Linda Darlings work; to the notions of memory and time infused in the work of Thom Sawyer, and Dennis Pinette; these artists bend our pliable notions of place, by making the real unreal, and the unreal real.

"The Bada Bing" by Patricia Rosoff

Simsbury abstract artist Joe Nicorici wanted to curate an abstract exhibit, and in February, he signed up his first artist: Patricia Rosoff, his art teacher and mentor at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, where he was in the class of 1999.

Rosoff did not live to see the exhibit. She was killed in late March in an auto accident in West Hartford.

UNTITLED: ABSTRACT EXHIBITION is at Hartford ArtSpace, 555 Asylum Ave., from July 10, when it opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. (suggested donation $5), until July 26. Gallery hours are Friday to Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Half of the artists' entry fees, and a percentage of donations from the reception, will benefit the Greater Hartford Arts Council. RIVER/SEA

Solo Exhibition on the theme of Water by Connecticut Artist Barbara Hocker will be at The Vernon Community Arts Center  from June 22, 2014 through September 27, 2014.

Vernon, Connecticut – River/Sea is an exhibition of works on/of paper that explore the artist’s thoughts on water as both subject matter and metaphor. Traces of a flood, memories of a childhood by the sea, and the trauma of oil spills are the artist’s inspiration for a series of handmade books, two room-sized installations, and other works on/of paper. Hocker begins with digital images of water from Connecticut waterways and combines them with various other waterbased media, encaustic, and video to produce ethereal yet intimate works of art. Through the Static and Distance is a room-sized installation of hanging rice paper panels printed with digital photos and infused with encaustic. Video projections provide the lighting. Viewers can travel into the center of the sculpture and back out again. The artist will be in residence June 16 to June 20 creating another on-site paper/fabric waterfall installation. The public is invited to visit from 1pm to 5pm each day to watch the installation take shape.

There will be an opening reception for the artist on Sunday June 22, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm. The public is welcome. Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday 1pm to 5pm

Richard Harden through May 4 at the Clare Gallery

The Clare Gallery is pleased to present Metanoia, a dramatic series of paintings by artist Richard Harden. The series consists of more than fifteen paintings that question the human condition through metaphorical associations. This exhibition is free and open to the public and extends from March 20–May 4, 2014.

A reception will be held on Thursday, April 24th, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. At the reception, Harden will discuss his undying search for universal meaning and imagery in the struggles and resurrection of the human condition.

The Clare Gallery’s hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Gallery and all related events are open to the public.
