The Prison Arts Program, initiated in 1978, works inside Connecticut prisons to positively and constructively change the lives of the incarcerated and the prison environment by encouraging unique, personal, and evolving artistic pursuits. These pursuits can engender hope in a hopeless place. Participants develop purpose, creativity, self-discipline, work ethic, self-esteem, technical and communication skill development, thoughtfulness, introspection, critical thinking, and calm.

A new gallery devoted to artworks reflecting the LGBTQ experience

A new gallery in Hartford that will be devoted to artworks reflecting the LGBTQ experience is being inaugurated this month with “Trans-cending Art,” a show of work by transgender Connecticut artists.

The gallery is inside Chez Est, the gay bar-restaurant at 458 Wethersfield Ave. The exhibit will run until Nov. 30. The dates coincide with Trangender Awareness Week, which is Nov. 13 to 19. Events will be held in conjunction with that observance, starting with an in-person and virtual fundraiser for a transgender hotline on Nov. 8.

Hartford Athletic starts playing games in its new home Dillon Stadium on July 13, and each week the fans will be greeted by a new poster custom-designed by a local artist.

A 12 by 18 inch poster, similar to rock-concert posters, will be designed for each home game, says to Cynthia Bulaong, executive director of Artists in Real Time, which is coordinating the project with the professional soccer team. The posters will hang in the stadium for each day’s game and be sold to the public.

Art in Hartford's Empty Storefronts

Empty storefronts of Hartford have been filled with dozens of artworks.

For years, Union Place in Hartford has been a forlorn sight, with 157 linear feet of empty storefronts. Until now.

The three vacant properties across the street from the train station have been filled with 31 pieces of art by 16 local artists to be observed by passers-by.

Gallerist Eric Ben-Kiki, working with Union Place Realty property manager Lisa Drazen, has finished the installation of a pop-up art gallery called the “Inside Out Project: Hartford” as a way of "weaving contemporary art into people’s daily lives.”

An opening reception, with many of the artists present, will be April 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. on the sidewalk outside the storefronts, and inside the former Seven Sins bar, which is one of the vacancies that Drazen wants to fill.

Five Points to acquire former UConn-Torrington campus

Five Points Center for the Visual Arts, which operates two galleries in downtown Torrington, would pay $275,000 for three buildings, constructed in 1965, and five acres of the 90-acre University Drive property. The other 85 undeveloped acres would be purchased for $100,000, by Five Points or by the City of Torrington, according to the nonprofit’s executive director, Judith McElhone.
